A Helping Hand for the Holidays

It truly is better to give than to receive, and there’s no more perfect time than the present to express that selfless thought! If you are in search of some creative ways to lend a helping hand this year, look no further. We have compiled a list of a few thoughtful ways to share the love this holiday season.

Adopt a Family

There are organizations out there that make it easy to “adopt” a family by sponsoring a holiday meal. Explore local chapters as well as those that focus on a select group such as families of overseas soldiers or the children of incarcerated parents.

Be an Angel

Children’s giggles and smiles are what the season is all about. Remind them how to be a kid with the simple gift of a game or doll. Find an Angel tree at local churches and schools. Pluck off a star or ornament with a “wish” written on it and make someone’s holiday dreams come true.

Shop Around

Be on the lookout for collection boxes provided by organizations such as Toys for Tots at your local mall or department store. While you’re filling up your shopping cart with the purchases on your list, just pick up an extra item for a needy child and drop it unwrapped in the designated bin.

Volunteer Your Time

We all know what a precious commodity time is. Donate some of yours to a soup kitchen in need of cooks or servers, nursing home residents who would appreciate a friendly-faced visitor or a group like Meals on Wheels that could use some help making deliveries. All are especially busy and understaffed this time of year and would no doubt value the extra support.

Collect Cans

Organize a mini food drive at your office or around your neighborhood. Suggest that everyone offer up one can or box of non-perishable food and assign a designated collection spot. Then gather and deliver the goods to a local church, shelter or other charitable organization.

Get Creative

Think outside the box and put a new spin on your gift exchange this year: Do a good deed in the name of someone you love. Check out the details of the White Envelope Project for inspirational ways to make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Now, don’t stop there. Once you participate in one or more of these suggestions, you’ll want that fulfilled feeling to continue and grow. So keep this list handy and reach out to others all the year through!
