It’s the sweetest week of the year! Besides having Valentine’s Day smack dab in the middle of it, February 11th through the 17th is Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week. Give a giant hug to your community by spreading the love as far and as wide as you can.
Give inspirational books to support those who may be going through a difficult time or entering a new chapter in life. Inscribe the book with an encouraging message.
Write down the personality traits and qualities you cherish most in your pals. Then include the list in a letter and share it with them.
Prepare a favorite recipe for your buds and deliver it in a beautiful bowl or dish to be kept as a reminder of your friendship.
For Senior Citizens
Take the time to ask about their past and show that you care enough to listen. They have amazing stories to tell and we all have much to learn from their wisdom and experience.
Send handmade cards to elderly or homebound neighbors just to say hello or compliment them and give them something to smile about.
Donate used books to the lending library of a senior center or nursing home. Tuck a handwritten note between the pages to surprise the reader with a wish for a wonderful day.
Pay for the person behind you whether you are grabbing your morning cup of coffee or at the market stocking up on groceries. It is a nice, unexpected way to brighten someone’s day.
Leave a stack of quarters at the laundromat with a friendly message. It’s a thoughtful way to make a tedious and boring task more enjoyable.
Commend a local business online for its extraordinary service or excellent merchandise. Small, local shops will especially appreciate and benefit from the endorsement.
For the Planet
Take reusable bags every time you make a grocery run. Our overflowing landfills certainly do not need any more plastic.
Pay your bills electronically whenever possible. Going paperless reduces your carbon footprint in amazing ways.
Drive on cruise control on those long, mind-numbing stretches of road. It will significantly reduce your car’s polluting emissions.
It’s a wonderful idea to practice random acts of kindness all the year through, but having one particular week designated specifically for that purpose is the perfect reminder that we are all one big family, and a little bit of thoughtfulness goes a long way. Visit the organization’s website for actual stories of RAK in action and for more ideas about how to share the joy.
