With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season nearly upon us – gift buying, decorating and a flurry of activities – it can be tough to find time to prepare your home for entertaining and hosting out-of-town family and friends.
Here are some quick and easy ways to get your home ready and make sure your guests feel welcome. Don’t sweat it– it’s not as time-consuming as you think!
Spruce up the entrance. Your guests’ visit begins as they approach the front door, so make sure the area is well-lit, walkways are swept or shoveled (if there’s snow or ice) and a wreath or other seasonal decorations adorn the door or porch.
Corral the clutter. Eliminate clutter in the main living areas to free up more space for increased foot traffic and make your home look its best. Tidy up by removing old magazines, books and stowing toys and games in baskets and bins.
Freshen up. Give the bathroom a deep cleaning before guests arrive. Provide a set of towels for each guest, along with basic toiletry items. (Who among us hasn’t left toothpaste, shampoo or some other key item at home?) Add fresh flowers to the bathroom and bedroom, and make sure your guests have extra pillows and blankets, just in case.
Provide space for luggage and clothing. Be sure to make room in your hall closet for visitors’ jackets, hats and boots. By the same token, clear an area in your guestroom closet and dresser for their belongings so they’ll feel more at home.
Pull out the spare dinnerware. You won’t have to worry about running out of clean dishes, glasses and utensils if you have extra sets ready to go. That way, you can spend more time visiting and less time washing dishes.
Create a kid-friendly space. If your friends or family member have young kids, take steps to childproof your home by placing plug covers on outlets, securing window treatment cords and putting breakable items out of their reach. Keep the little ones entertained with fun activities like printable place mats, perfect for coloring.
These quick and easy preparations will help make your guests feel comfortable and enable you to focus on having fun and celebrating the season together.
