Santa Barbara County

Fountain With Reflection Of Santa Barabara Mission

Welcome to Santa Barbara County

Santa Barbara is nestled between the lush and steep vertical rise of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. While not quite as dramatic as the precipitous topography of the Amalfi Coast in Italy, Santa Barbara is certainly a picturesque version of the Mediterranean vibe in California. Blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in California, the south-facing coastline is the longest stretch of its kind along the western coast of the United States, so don’t expect that typical sunset over the ocean’s horizon! Santa Barbara is the seat for Santa Barbara County and the second largest city in the county after Santa Maria, with an estimated 88,410 residents. In addition to being a highly sought after resort and tourist destination, the city is also touted as a reputable destination for education, with five notable higher education institutions: University of California-Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, Antioch College and the Brooks Institute of Photography.

It’s not often that civic leaders are responsible for the united look and feel of a city, but following a landmark event in 1925, Santa Barbara leaders adopted an architectural image of the Spanish Colonial Revival style for its downtown, complimenting the then-predominant residential styles of California bungalows, Victorians, and Spanish-style homes built during the early decades of the 20th century.

To the east is Montecito, an unincorporated million-dollar area of Santa Barbara County, with a petite population count of approximately 8,965, including some name-dropping celebrity-status mansion owners, including Oprah Winfrey, Rob Lowe, Ellen DeGeneres and Drew Barrymore.
