Tech Tuesday: Telling The Story of Smart Home

To kick off Tech Tuesday, Coldwell Banker Inside Out is “Telling The Story of Smart Home”. Come back every Tuesday for tips and product suggestions to make your own home just a little smarter.

Recently at CES 2016, Coldwell Banker®, tech news giants CNET, and several leaders from smart home sphere took the stage for a panel discussion. The topic was the intersection of real estate and smart home technology. Real estate professionals and tech industry experts agree that for smart home technology to be successful, homeowners and their families need to hear the story about smart home living.

The humble house key, light bulb, and thermostat are all tried and true pieces of every day life, so why change them? Can all these fancy gadgets really make us forget about our deadbolts and dimmer switches?

The goal of a smart home is to make control easy, efficient and, in many cases, automatic. By combining WiFi, mobile apps, motion sensors, and more with the fixtures of your home, your family can live more comfortably, save energy, and perhaps get rid of some of those pesky annoyances.

A smart thermostat lets you adjust the temperature from your smartphone, making sure it’s just right when you walk in the door. It can also save energy by adjusting automatically once everyone has left for the day. Smart lights can set the mood for movie night with the push of a button, turn off that forgotten lamp without getting out of bed, or change colors for your next big party. Connected door locks mean no more standing on the porch and fumbling for a house key or wondering if someone remembered to lock the door when they left. With WiFi enabled cameras, you can even keep an eye out without an expensive security system (or just check in on your furry friends).

This just scratches the surface of living in a smart home. There are plenty of innovative companies that make having a smart home more affordable and accessible then it has ever been. A homeowner can easily install many of these new products without the need for technicians or costly service plans. Most can also move with you when it’s time to relocate.

Still, upgrading your home can be a daunting task with all the apps, hubs, and widgets to choose from. Be sure to follow #TechTuesday each week for a vast selection of products for smart lighting, climate control, security and more.
