By now you have probably binged watched House of Cards Seasons 1 & 2 in preparation for the much-anticipatedSeason 3 release. The topic on everyone’s mind is, what kind of mischief is Mr. Frank Underwood going to get into this season as he ascends to become the most powerful man in the nation and will sure enough exert his manipulative influence over the White House (again!).
As a piece of today’s pop culture, we can’t help but incorporate aspects of the House of Cards into our daily lives. Here are five things that are inspired by the television phenomena that has swept the nation.
Presidential Real Estate
Although there aren’t too many brick townhouses in California, we can pull design inspiration from the Underwood Home. The Underwood residence is an updated traditional Washington, D.C. look, featuring a neutral color palette, elegant fabrics, brass lamps, upholstered traditional furniture, and dark woods that highlight the mid-1800’s architectural features. The Underwoods’ style is known as new traditionalist.
As Frank says, “power is a lot like real estate. It’s all about location, location, location.” I tried to imagine the Underwoods’ home should they decide to trade in the presidency for California legislature and bring their next conspiracy to Tinseltown. After much consideration, I selected this world-class estate perfectly located upon rolling lawns and gardens in Laurel Canyon. It’s regal architecture, traditional design elements, and Southern charm draw parallels to the Underwood home and even looks like a miniature White House.
The neutral color palate, dark hard floors, decadent chandeliers, and grand staircase are reminiscent of the Underwood traditionalist style with a pop of color adding California coastal flare. Complete with a “gentlemen’s room/library with full bar,” media room, and wine cellar, this home is Underwood ready—it’s only missing the rowing machine downstairs.
Freddy’s Sticky, Saucy Barbecued Ribs
There is nothing that Frank indulges in more than a good rack of ribs and now you can finally sink your teeth into the real deal. Chef and author Curtis Stone teamed up with Netflix to recreate Freddy’s famous barbecue rib recipe. Follow the link below to enjoy this Southern recipe.

A spin on the classic old fashion, try this reinvented Southern recipe made with Frank’s libation of choice Blanton’s Bourbon—the Maple Bourbon Smash.
